Aktau Nuclear Power Station

Aktau NPP Kazakhstan's only nuclear power plant is a liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactor of the BN-350 design located at Aktau on the Caspian Sea. Of the 350 thermal megawatts (MWt) produced by the plant, 200 are used to operate a desalination plant. The remaining 150 MWt are used to generate 135 MW of electricity. This accounts for only 0.15% of the total amount of electricity generated in the country.

During 1998, discussions with Kazakhstan officials will be held to determine what DOE support is needed to reduce risk at the Aktau nuclear power plant.
