Scope of DOE Activities

Operator training is a key factor in improving safety of day-to-day operations. At the Balakovo nuclear power plant, a major DOE effort has been to establish the Balakovo Training Center, a fully equipped training facility at which reactor operators from other Russian reactors can be trained in the "Systematic Approach to Training" methodology (1993-1998).

At the Balakovo Training Center, job-specific and general safety-related courses have been developed for use at the Center and at other Russian reactors (1994-1998). Other major projects are focusing on developing improved operating procedures and practices (1994-1997) and providing an analytical simulator (1995-ongoing) and upgrading a full-scope simulator to enhance effectiveness of training at Unit 4 (1996-1997).
