Scope of DOE Activities

DOE efforts at the Kola nuclear power plant are directed primarily toward improving the safety of day-to-day operations at the plant and upgrading critical plant safety systems. Projects focus on developing emergency operating instructions (1993-1997), as well as on upgrading the confinement system (1993-1997) and other engineered safety systems (1993-1998) at the plant. Projects also are in place to perform safety assessments and to transfer capabilities for performing plant safety analyses (1996-ongoing) and to provide a full-scope simulator to enhance staff training at the plant (1995-ongoing).
