LithuaniaPriorities of five plant safety analysis projects discussed for Ignalina nuclear power plantDuring the second week of December, two technical specialists from Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) traveled to Kaunas, Lithuania to meet with host-country specialists regarding Ignalina nuclear power plant safety issues. The meetings were held at the Lithuania Energy Institute and the Kaunas University of Technology. Discussions concerned the priorities of five plant-safety analysis projects
previously proposed by the Lithuanians for consideration of U.S. support. After
determining the details of the proposals, their costs, the duration of the prospective
projects, and the true value of their results, an agreement was reached as to
which particular projects could be undertaken at this time. Also discussed was
the distribution of effort on the proposed projects between personnel of the
Kaunas University of Technology and the Lithuanian Energy Institute. The direct
contact meetings with the personnel of the institutions were essential for resolving
technical issues involved in the reactor safety projects. (Mark Petri, ANL,
